Expansion and Contraction

Expansion and Contraction. Humans learn through the process of energetic expansion and contraction. This is the process of birth. This is the flow of life, this is the work of death: Expansion and Contraction.

There is nothing outside of these two experiences in the human realm. The great mystery of life is born through the female body, the divine feminine wisdom of ebb and flow. There would be no childbirth without contractions followed by a push. The birth canal is similar to the awakening process in which you must walk with your fear through the dark tunnel of the unknown in order to eventually expand out into the light.

The contraction of the unknown spaces within your being: the fear of speaking up, asking for help, allowing yourself to be seen. This all shows up as a contraction, a long, dark tunnel. Your breathing becomes more shallow. You feel fearful. As you are walking through the dark tunnel, you feel alone, but then you look beside yourself and notice that your most familiar companion is walking beside you: fear.

You have a choice: Do you scream, turn around and run back to where you came from, abandoning the fear and the potential to learn and grow? Or do you give yourself permission to take a calculated risk, remember to breathe and look fear straight in the eye and say “Hi my friend, I see you. What do you have to teach me today?”

With that invitation, you can choose to walk beside fear in the long, dark tunnel and listen intently. Bringing in curiosity, you acknowledge everything you are afraid would happen if you…show up in a new way, take a risk, allow yourself to be vulnerable. In the process of befriending fear, you communicate the following: I am willing to experience _________ in order to learn __________. Through this process I will grow.

As you eventually learn how to hold hands with your friend fear in this long, anticipatory walk you recognize that you absolutely are not alone. In fact, the opposite is true. You have just made friends with the greatest catalyst for change and growth, you see! You have just said “yes” to your evolution of consciousness. Congratulations, Dear One!

You are afraid because you are fully showing up for your life. Wow, what a joy, what a gift! So as you walk the tunnel with your friend fear, you slowly start to realize that what you’re about to do just isn’t as scary as your ego is trying to convince you that it is. In fact, as you start to get a faint glimpse of light peering into the other end of the tunnel, you start to access the hope, joy and freedom that exists on the other side.

So now you get to do something different. It’s time to pull off the bandaid and do the thing you’ve convinced yourself that you don’t want to do. Here it is. The art of doing the opposite. It is extremely uncomfortable at first because you don’t have a context for it, but then once you push through the pain, you come out on the other side and experience vast joy, love, connection, healing and the gift of being seen not in spite of your vulnerability but BECAUSE of it.

You see, this is where true freedom lives! Just like that newborn baby, pushing through the birth canal, on the brink of literally entering a whole new reality called earth school. Your whole life is full of these “new reality” creation moments, you see. This is true freedom. Tolerating the discomfort of the unknown in order to create a new reality that feels bigger, bolder and brighter than before.

The tunnel is the contraction. The light on the other side is the expansion and life is a series of these two realities, you see. Acceptance of this is key for you to be free of the suffering created by the mind that is all about resisting the tunnel and running back to what you know. If you stay there, then you don’t grow. And when you only live in your comfort zone, you don’t open yourself to the wisdom that shows up for you when you can see fully and experience fully the possibility for your life and the connection you get to have with yourself and others.

This is how you grow, you see. This is it! Think about the breath of life that is always breathing you. You are most often not conscious of your breath of life but it is always there for you, breathing you, supporting you through and through. The breath of life is indeed contraction followed by expansion over and over again. This is the reality of life on earth. And in the end, as your breath of life slows down, you continue to have an experience with the things you must work through to enter the death canal.

Walk with your fears through the dark tunnel and enter into the light, finally truly free, expansive and back into the great mystery beyond. This is it, you see! this is it! Mastery of the contractions and expansion of life starts with the full acceptance of the paradigm that you are in from now until your last sacred breath on this planet.
